The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) recently hosted a delegation from the Bank of Namibia (BoN) comprising officials from the Research and Financial Sector Development Department and the Strategic Communications and International Relations Department for a familiarisation visit to its slaughter and meat processing facilities. This was held on Tuesday, 21st July.
The visit formed part of the Bank of Namibia’s annual stakeholder engagement programme with key sectors of the economy, aimed at strengthening its understanding of industry performance, emerging trends and the broader economic environment. These engagements enable the Bank to gather firsthand insights that support its economic research, policy analysis and statistical reporting.
During the visit, the delegation received an overview of Meatco’s livestock procurement and cattle marketing systems, slaughter operations and value-adding activities across the meat processing value chain. Discussions also covered current slaughter trends and production patterns, which provide important indicators of the state of Namibia’s national cattle herd, developments within the livestock sector and the industry’s outlook for the coming financial period.
The information gathered during these engagements contributes to the Bank’s assessment of sectoral performance and the role of agriculture and agro-processing in Namibia’s economy, supporting evidence-based policy formulation and economic decision-making.
Commenting on the visit, Meatco Interim Chief Executive Officer Amb. Albertus Aochamub said: “Meatco welcomes the Bank of Namibia’s continued engagement with productive sectors of the economy. Sound economic policy is strengthened by a thorough understanding of industries that create value, generate export earnings and sustain livelihoods. The livestock and meat industry remain a strategic pillar of Namibia’s economy, and we are pleased to contribute insights that support informed economic analysis and evidence-based policymaking.”
