The 2nd Namibia Regional Water Symposium (NRWS) concluded under the theme; “Water Security: a generational human right for sustainable economic development”.
The 2025 Namibia Regional Water Symposium (NRWS) took place in the //Kharas region, Keetmanshoop in early February brought together various stakeholders to discuss the complex interplay between water security and sustainable development, particularly in light of significant proposed projects in the Hardap, Omaheke, and //Kharas regions.
Established in 2023 by the Department of Water Affairs under the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR), the NRWS was born from a vision to bring together experts, policy makers, and communities to tackle Namibia`s water challenges. The platform continues to evolve as a beacon of progress and commitment to water security, sustainability and ensuring provision for the participation of all the critical stakeholders, from grass root level, services providers and up to decision-making level.
In his keynote address, the Minister of Agriculture, Water & Land Reform (MAWLR) Calle Schlettwein stated that water is more than just a resource; it is a fundamental human right and a catalyst for economic growth and stability.
Schlettwein emphasised that water security cannot be achieved by a single entity but rather it requires collaboration, innovation, and commitment from all stakeholders. The minister encouraged government agencies, private sector, civil society, academic institutions, and local communities to join hands and safeguard water resources for generations to come. “We must embrace sustainable water management practices, invest in innovative technologies, and promote equitable access to clean water and sanitation,” he said.
Namibia is regarded to be one of the driest country in Southern Africa, where water is both a precious and scarce resource. Namibia`s reliance on groundwater, coupled with unpredictable impacts of climate change, places the country in constant battle to ensure sustainable water supply for all.
This year, the discussion of Namibia Regional Water Symposium (NRWS) revolved around four strategic focal areas: water security and sustainability in Namibia, water and economic development in Southern Namibia, Sustainable Water Resources Management and Community-Based Management of water and sanitation.
During the recent held Regional Water Symposium, it was emphasized that there is a need to embrace sustainable water management practices, invest in innovative technologies, and promote equitable access to clean water and sanitation.
