As part of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s directive to acquire and expand more land for agricultural production, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform recently conducted water surveys to establish boreholes for an irrigation project on its 140-hectare brownfield site in Ekoka Village, east of Okongo Town in the Ohangwena Region.
The project is expected, not only to boost food production but also create employment opportunities and ensure that the surrounding community benefits directly from the agricultural produce.
This was revealed by the Ministry’s Executive Director, Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, during her visit to the farm earlier in August.
A team from the Directorate of Agricultural Production, Extension and Engineering Services was also on-site and conducted soil sampling and other technical assessments to advise management on the way forward for the project to become fully operational.
The Ministry’s vision is to establish agricultural projects in all 14 regions, ensuring that every region contributes to nutritious food production, job creation, community’s resilience and promotes national food self-reliance.
